"The whole package for a great night out" "A fantastic site, literally everything that is happening in Portsmouth is reported on this page." University Celebrates International Women's Day The University of Portsmouth is celebrating International Women’s Day this week with a free public lecture and film screening. Dr Tamsin Bradley, a reader in International Development Studies, will deliver a lecture about ending violence against women and girls on March 8. Dr Bradley will map the why, how and where of different forms of violence against women and girls, outline the main global programmes designed to end it and offer local examples of how these programmes are playing out in specific contexts across the world. International Women’s Day (IWD) is a worldwide event that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women – while also calling for gender equality. Dave Small, equality and diversity manager, said: “The university is pleased once again to be supporting events in recognition of International Women's Day, acknowledging the struggles experienced by women across the world, not only in history but even today, but also celebrating the great leaps forward in gender equality. “Examples of the university's practical commitment to gender equality are demonstrated in its support for the Aurora and Springboard, development programmes specifically to support women and the Athena SWAN charter, a programme dedicated to delivering gender equality across all areas of university activity for staff and students, for which the university holds a bronze organisation award as well as ten departments awards.” The university is also collaborating with the Portsmouth Film Society to host a film screening of the Disney film Queen of Katwe on March 7. Queen of Katwe is a colourful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. Premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, the film is directed by Mira Nair, starring newcomer Madina Nalwanga, David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o. To book tickets for the film screening at 6pm please visit Eventbrite . The free lecture will be followed by a drinks reception. Please book tickets via  Eventbrite .
